FIRST EDITION (Cover A, 1930-1934)
Edition
Notes: Cover art by Andy Janson. 136 pages, 4 1/2”
x 7”. Illustrations were ink drawings by Andy Janson.
Historical Notes: The BSA Boy’s
Cubbook was not just an adaptation of Baden-Powell’s 1916
“Wolf-Cub’s Handbook.” Akela, Baloo, and Mowgli from Kipling’s
“Jungle Book” had been transferred to North America. The tests and
awards were rewritten with advice from educators and child
psychologists. Quote:
The Indian has always been pictured to us as a
warrior and fighter -- but he was a great peace maker as well. He
was as colorful and dramatic in his peace making as he was swift and
terrible on the warpath. But his warpaths led to the peace of the
council fire. May each Bear Cub see, with the Indian, the values of
peace, and seek in home and school and backyard and street to show
“good-will” as the Law of the Cub Pack states. |
