In 1930, Wolf was the entry rank for "Cubbing",
open to nine-year-old boys.
The rank was named after Akela in "The Jungle Book" but
the 1930 Wolf Story was not taken from
Rudyard Kipling. This was done in an attempt to
"Americanize" the program.
In 1930, Bear was
open to ten-year-old boys.
The rank was named after Baloo in "The Jungle Book."
Lion was the third rank,
open to eleven-year-old boys. The rank took its
name after the British Lion in honor of the birthplace
of Cubbing.
Webelos was
introduced in 1941 as a transition period between Cubs
and Boy Scouts and occupied the last six months of the
Lion year. It became a year long program in 1967
when Lion was dropped as a rank.
